Critique in a lesson

What happened in today's lesson....

Critique, exploring schools around the world, taking pictures of good learning.

20th March

We started today's lesson by looking at photos of schools in other countries.  They often looked very plain and nothing like ours.  A lot looked very poor, some had desks, some didn't.  Some had older children, some wore uniform, some didn't.  Some had very big classes, some didn't.

We though more about critiquing this week.  The class agreed how to do it.  We set rules about critiquing.

  • Be honest
  • Be kind
  • Be specific
  • Be helpful
  • Be encouraging
We looked at some of Graham's pictures and gave our opinions about them.

Finally we went back to the job of taking pictures of our own.  When we came back to class we swapped our laptops and critiqued each other's pictures.

Wednesday 13th March

Latest news from our project.....

We continued to think about what learning looks like in our school. We reminded ourselves about what makes a good photo and the decisions we need to make when taking a photo.   We decided where to go in school to take pictures and then went off on our mission!

We took lots of pictures around school and when we came back to class we looked at each others pictures to pick 3 of the best ones from each group.  Some showed really good learning.

We're beginning to think learning isn't just happening when people are working at their desks.  It could be when they are thinking or playing or making things.

Wednesday 6th March

On Wednesday we discussed pictures (well photos actually) and we shared our ideas with the class about what we thought the photos looked like.
They were all portraits.  We discussed what made a good picture and how WE could compose a good photograph.

Then we were asked to take pictures of a person in our challenge group, showing them in a place that was important to them around school.

Groups picked places like..... the astroturf, the radio studio, the allotments, the stage and the nurture room.

Their pictures were good (we're already improving our skills!) BUT some groups didn't quite follow the instructions and came up with a group photo instead of a portrait.
